Adriatic winds
Bura Bora
Cold, dry, katabatic wind falling from the coastal mountains (Velebit, Biokovo). Very gusty — extreme changes in speed within seconds.
Most dangerous wind. Gusts commonly exceed 100 km/h (55 kn). If forecast, stay in port or shelter behind the lee of Velebit / Biokovo. Announced by clear sky, cap cloud over the peaks and a sudden pressure rise.
Jugo Sirocco (Široko)
Warm, humid wind blowing along the whole Adriatic. Builds slowly over 12–36 hours; brings cloud, rain and long swell.
Long fetch = large waves across the whole sea. Announced by falling pressure, rising humidity, low SE clouds. Reduces visibility and tires the crew — plan an early port stop before it fully develops.
Maestral Mistral
Refreshing thermal wind driven by the temperature difference between land and sea. Rises after noon, dies around sunset.
The sailor's friend. Steady 10–20 knots, sunny sky, stable direction — ideal for pleasant afternoon sailing along the coast.
Lebić Libeccio / Garbin
Warm, gusty wind, frequently arriving as a short but violent squall with thunderstorms. Follows the passage of a cold front.
Dangerous in west-facing anchorages (open to SW). Change bay or move to a leeward shore before it hits. Usually clears from the NW soon after — maestral typically follows.
